Freezin Technology, Scientists have invented a new technology for freezing. They call this new technology ionocaloric cooling. Scientists are looking at the possibility of using it as an alternative to the existing process of freezing. Not only that, this new technology is more secure and helpful for the world.


Refrigeration process

In the normal refrigeration process, cooling is created by removing heat through gases. As efficient as this process is, more worrying is that the gas used is harmful to the environment.

New technology invented by scientists is environmentally friendly. Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California in the United States developed this new method of freezing.

When a screen or object transforms from one form to another, some energy is stored or released. Researchers find new ways to take advantage of this energy storage or emission process. Scientists call it ionocaloric cycle.

Mechanical engineer Drew Lilly of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California said the process of freezing is still unsolved. No one has successfully devised an alternative—one that cools the product very effectively and that is safe and environmentally friendly. We think that if this process can be done correctly, the ionocaloric cycle has the potential to accomplish that goal.

If you increase the heat to a part of the ice, that part melts. Again adding a few charged particles or ions without heat causes ice to melt. For example, in winter countries, salt is spread on roads to prevent ice. Ionocaloric processes also use salt to change the liquid phase of matter and cool its surroundings.

Scientists conducted experiments

The team of scientists conducted experiments using salts made of iodine and sodium to dissolve ethylene carbonate. It also got the expected results. Ravi Prasher, another machine engineer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said, ‘We tried to balance three things. They are global warming, effectiveness, and cost of freezing in this process. The data from the first attempt look very promising in three respects.


More experiments are now needed to address the engineering challenge, scientists say. Their research paper has also been published in Science Journal.
