Man gets 10 years in prison for vandalizing PM Hasina’s photo

A court in Narayanganj has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison for vandalizing a photo of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Sonargaon upazila of the district seven years ago.

Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Sabina Yeasmin handed down the prison sentence to Sohag Ali, 25, on Tuesday. He had been tried in absentia.

The court also slapped him with a fine of Tk20,000, failure to pay which would result in an additional three months in jail.

On December 27, 2015, Sohag removed the photo of the prime minister hanging in the room of the upazila parishad chairman and took it to the premises of the local Shaheed Minar before vandalizing it.

Locals later detained him and turned him over to the police.

Upazila Parishad Computer Operator Ashraful Islam filed a case against Sohag in connection with the vandalism.

Sohag has been on the run since getting out of jail after securing bail.
